Recently, Haymarket had a sale of poetry books in honor of the National Poetry Month, which coincided with the sale of several of their other titles. Sales of books are like Catnip for me, so I received a book that was on my Forever list, a collection of an author I wanted to read for some time, and a completely new collection and poet.

Before I get to the books, let me tell you about Haymarket really fast. It is a “radical, independent publisher of non -profit books with headquarters in Chicago” in order to help the fight for social and economic justice through books.

If you are curious about some of their suggestions, continue below for the legacy of a story, creating a black feminist group of the 70’s, a poetic look at the 1919 Race in Chicago, and poems about the layered identities of the Palestinian American poet.

How do we release ourselves from keeanga-yamahtta taylor

This 2018 Lambda Award examines the legacy and contribution of members of the founders of the Kombahi River, an innovative group of radical black feminists who formed during the 1970s. Here, interviews and essays with and from the founders of the group reflect on black feminism.

A collection of an author who means to read for some time

1919 by Eva L. Ewing

Using poetry and afrofuturist lenses, Ewing has largely examined the unknown rebellion in Chicago since 1919 – also known as the Red Summer – which led to 38 deaths, 500 injuries and lasted eight days.

A whole new collection and poet to me

The Palestinian American poet Noor Hindi layers of the various aspects of her identity, explores them and explores how colonialism, patriarchy, religion and all other aspects of their society interact with them.
