What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?

The well-known speech by Frederick Douglass given at Corinthian Corridor in Rochester, New York earlier than the Rochester Women’ Anti-Slavery Society is within the information at present. Since many (together with a moderately distinguished former NFL quarterback turned activist) are quoting solely parts of the speech – usually out of context – permit me to supply the speech for you in its entirety.
Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery in Maryland and have become a nationwide abolitionist chief in Massachusetts and New York. His oratorical prowess and voluminous writings made him a family title and cemented his standing as a social reformer and activist for a few years.
His well-known Fourth of July speech (really delivered on July 5) in 1852 is likely one of the biggest speeches in American historical past. It’s a magnificent oration calling out the American individuals for his or her hypocrisy in extolling sure virtues and ideas within the American founding whereas, on the similar time, countenancing, benefiting from, and (in lots of instances) working towards slavery. However opposite to well-liked false impression, Douglass’ intent (made clear once you learn his complete speech) wasn’t to easily bash America. It was to wake Individuals up and name them (through Douglass’ full righteous indignation) to stay out the ideas they claimed to espouse.

“What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
Speech by Frederick Douglass
Rochester, NY – July 5, 1852
Mr. President, Associates and Fellow Residents:
He who may handle this viewers with out a quailing sensation, has stronger nerves than I’ve. I don’t keep in mind ever to have appeared as a speaker earlier than any meeting extra shrinkingly, nor with higher mistrust of my skill, than I do that day. A sense has crept over me, fairly unfavorable to the train of my restricted powers of speech. The duty earlier than me is one which requires a lot earlier thought and examine for its correct efficiency. I do know that apologies of this kind are usually thought-about flat and unmeaning. I belief, nonetheless, that mine won’t be so thought-about. Ought to I appear comfy, my look would a lot misrepresent me. The little expertise I’ve had in addressing public conferences, in nation schoolhouses, avails me nothing on the current event.
The papers and placards say, that I’m to ship a 4th (of) July oration. This actually sounds massive, and out of the widespread approach, for it’s true that I’ve usually had the privilege to talk on this stunning Corridor, and to handle many who now honor me with their presence. However neither their acquainted faces, nor the proper gage I feel I’ve of Corinthian Corridor, appears to free me from embarrassment.
The very fact is, girls and gents, the gap between this platform and the slave plantation, from which I escaped, is appreciable — and the difficulties to be overcome in getting from the latter to the previous, are under no circumstances slight. That I’m right here to-day is, to me, a matter of astonishment in addition to of gratitude. You’ll not, due to this fact, be shocked, if in what I’ve to say I evince no elaborate preparation, nor grace my speech with any excessive sounding exordium. With little expertise and with much less studying, I’ve been capable of throw my ideas unexpectedly and imperfectly collectively; and trusting to your affected person and beneficiant indulgence, I’ll proceed to put them earlier than you.
This, for the aim of this celebration, is the 4th of July. It’s the birthday of your Nationwide Independence, and of your political freedom. This, to you, is what the Passover was to the emancipated individuals of God. It carries your minds again to the day, and to the act of your nice deliverance; and to the indicators, and to the wonders, related to that act, and that day. This celebration additionally marks the start of one other 12 months of your nationwide life; and reminds you that the Republic of America is now 76 years outdated. I’m glad, fellow-citizens, that your nation is so younger. Seventy-six years, although a great outdated age for a person, is however a mere speck within the lifetime of a nation. Three rating years and ten is the allotted time for particular person males; however nations quantity their years by 1000’s. In response to this reality, you’re, even now, solely at first of your nationwide profession, nonetheless lingering within the interval of childhood. I repeat, I’m glad that is so. There may be hope within the thought, and hope is far wanted, beneath the darkish clouds which decrease above the horizon. The attention of the reformer is met with offended flashes, portending disastrous instances; however his coronary heart might effectively beat lighter on the thought that America is younger, and that she continues to be within the impressible stage of her existence. Might he not hope that top classes of knowledge, of justice and of reality, will but give route to her future? Had been the nation older, the patriot’s coronary heart is likely to be sadder, and the reformer’s forehead heavier. Its future is likely to be shrouded in gloom, and the hope of its prophets exit in sorrow. There may be comfort within the thought that America is younger. Nice streams aren’t simply turned from channels, worn deep in the midst of ages. They might typically rise in quiet and stately majesty, and inundate the land, refreshing and fertilizing the earth with their mysterious properties. They might additionally rise in wrath and fury, and bear away, on their offended waves, the gathered wealth of years of toil and hardship. They, nonetheless, steadily circulate again to the identical outdated channel, and circulate on as serenely as ever. However, whereas the river will not be turned apart, it could dry up, and depart nothing behind however the withered department, and the unpleasant rock, to howl within the abyss-sweeping wind, the unhappy story of departed glory. As with rivers so with nations.
Fellow-citizens, I shall not presume to dwell at size on the associations that cluster about this present day. The easy story of it’s that, 76 years in the past, the individuals of this nation had been British topics. The type and title of your “sovereign individuals” (by which you now glory) was not then born. You had been beneath the British Crown. Your fathers esteemed the English Authorities as the house authorities; and England because the fatherland. This residence authorities, you understand, though a substantial distance from your property, did, within the train of its parental prerogatives, impose upon its colonial kids, such restraints, burdens and limitations, as, in its mature judgment, it deemed clever, proper and correct.
However, your fathers, who had not adopted the modern concept of this present day, of the infallibility of presidency, and absolutely the character of its acts, presumed to vary from the house authorities in respect to the knowledge and the justice of a few of these burdens and restraints. They went to date of their pleasure as to pronounce the measures of presidency unjust, unreasonable, and oppressive, and altogether akin to ought to not be quietly submitted to. I scarcely want say, fellow-citizens, that my opinion of these measures absolutely accords with that of your fathers. Such a declaration of settlement on my half wouldn’t be price a lot to anyone. It might, actually, show nothing, as to what half I might need taken, had I lived in the course of the nice controversy of 1776. To say now that America was proper, and England unsuitable, is exceedingly simple. Everyone can say it; the dastard, not lower than the noble courageous, can flippantly discant on the tyranny of England in the direction of the American Colonies. It’s modern to take action; however there was a time when to pronounce towards England, and in favor of the reason for the colonies, tried males’s souls. They who did so had been accounted of their day, plotters of mischief, agitators and rebels, harmful males. To facet with the appropriate, towards the unsuitable, with the weak towards the sturdy, and with the oppressed towards the oppressor! right here lies the benefit, and the one which, of all others, appears retro in our day. The reason for liberty could also be stabbed by the boys who glory within the deeds of your fathers. However, to proceed.
Feeling themselves harshly and unjustly handled by the house authorities, your fathers, like males of honesty, and males of spirit, earnestly sought redress. They petitioned and remonstrated; they did so in a decorous, respectful, and dependable method. Their conduct was wholly unexceptionable. This, nonetheless, didn’t reply the aim. They noticed themselves handled with sovereign indifference, coldness and scorn. But they persevered. They weren’t the boys to look again.
Because the sheet anchor takes a firmer maintain, when the ship is tossed by the storm, so did the reason for your fathers develop stronger, because it breasted the chilling blasts of kingly displeasure. The best and better of British statesmen admitted its justice, and the loftiest eloquence of the British Senate got here to its assist. However, with that blindness which appears to be the unvarying attribute of tyrants, since Pharaoh and his hosts had been drowned within the Purple Sea, the British Authorities persevered within the exactions complained of.
The insanity of this course, we imagine, is admitted now, even by England; however we worry the lesson is wholly misplaced on our current ruler.
Oppression makes a clever man mad. Your fathers had been clever males, and if they didn’t go mad, they grew to become restive beneath this therapy. They felt themselves the victims of grievous wrongs, wholly incurable of their colonial capability. With courageous males there may be all the time a treatment for oppression. Simply right here, the concept of a complete separation of the colonies from the crown was born! It was a startling concept, way more so, than we, at this distance of time, regard it. The timid and the prudent (as has been intimated) of that day, had been, in fact, shocked and alarmed by it.
Such individuals lived then, had lived earlier than, and can, in all probability, ever have a spot on this planet; and their course, in respect to any nice change, (irrespective of how nice the great to be attained, or the unsuitable to be redressed by it), could also be calculated with as a lot precision as will be the course of the celebrities. They hate all adjustments, however silver, gold and copper change! Of this kind of change they’re all the time strongly in favor.
These individuals had been known as Tories within the days of your fathers; and the appellation, in all probability, conveyed the identical concept that’s meant by a extra trendy, although a considerably much less euphonious time period, which we frequently discover in our papers, utilized to a few of our outdated politicians.
Their opposition to the then harmful thought was earnest and highly effective; however, amid all their terror and affrighted vociferations towards it, the alarming and revolutionary concept moved on, and the nation with it.
On the 2nd of July, 1776, the outdated Continental Congress, to the dismay of the lovers of ease, and the worshipers of property, clothed that dreadful concept with all of the authority of nationwide sanction. They did so within the type of a decision; and as we seldom stumble on resolutions, drawn up in our day whose transparency is in any respect equal to this, it could refresh your minds and assist my story if I learn it.
“Resolved, That these united colonies are, and of proper, should be free and Unbiased States; that they’re absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown; and that each one political connection between them and the State of Nice Britain is, and should be, dissolved.”
Residents, your fathers made good that decision. They succeeded; and to-day you reap the fruits of their success. The liberty gained is yours; and also you, due to this fact, might correctly rejoice this anniversary. The 4th of July is the primary nice reality in your nation’s historical past — the very ring-bolt within the chain of your but undeveloped future.
Pleasure and patriotism, not lower than gratitude, immediate you to rejoice and to carry it in perpetual remembrance. I’ve stated that the Declaration of Independence is the ring-bolt to the chain of your nation’s future; so, certainly, I regard it. The ideas contained in that instrument are saving ideas. Stand by these ideas, be true to them on all events, all over the place, towards all foes, and at no matter value.
From the spherical prime of your ship of state, darkish and threatening clouds could also be seen. Heavy billows, like mountains within the distance, confide in the leeward large types of flinty rocks! That bolt drawn, that chain damaged, and all is misplaced. Cling to this present day — cling to it, and to its ideas, with the grasp of a storm-tossed mariner to a spar at midnight.
The approaching into being of a nation, in any circumstances, is an attention-grabbing occasion. However, moreover basic issues, there have been peculiar circumstances which make the arrival of this republic an occasion of particular attractiveness.
The entire scene, as I look again to it, was easy, dignified and stylish.
The inhabitants of the nation, on the time, stood on the insignificant variety of three thousands and thousands. The nation was poor within the munitions of battle. The inhabitants was weak and scattered, and the nation a wilderness unsubdued. There have been then no technique of live performance and mixture, akin to exist now. Neither steam nor lightning had then been decreased to order and self-discipline. From the Potomac to the Delaware was a journey of many days. Below these, and innumerable different disadvantages, your fathers declared for liberty and independence and triumphed.
Fellow Residents, I’m not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence had been courageous males. They had been nice males too — nice sufficient to provide fame to an incredible age. It doesn’t usually occur to a nation to boost, at one time, such quite a few actually nice males. The purpose from which I’m compelled to view them shouldn’t be, actually, probably the most favorable; and but I can’t ponder their nice deeds with lower than admiration. They had been statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the great they did, and the ideas they contended for, I’ll unite with you to honor their reminiscence.
They cherished their nation higher than their very own personal pursuits; and, although this isn’t the very best type of human excellence, all will concede that it’s a uncommon advantage, and that when it’s exhibited, it should command respect. He who will, intelligently, lay down his life for his nation, is a person whom it’s not in human nature to despise. Your fathers staked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, on the reason for their nation. Of their admiration of liberty, they overlooked all different pursuits.
They had been peace males; however they most popular revolution to peaceable submission to bondage. They had been quiet males; however they didn’t shrink from agitating towards oppression. They confirmed forbearance; however that they knew its limits. They believed so as; however not within the order of tyranny. With them, nothing was “settled” that was not proper. With them, justice, liberty and humanity had been “closing;” not slavery and oppression. Chances are you’ll effectively cherish the reminiscence of such males. They had been nice of their day and era. Their stable manhood stands out the extra as we distinction it with these degenerate instances.
How circumspect, precise and proportionate had been all their actions! How not like the politicians of an hour! Their statesmanship appeared past the passing second, and stretched away in energy into the distant future. They seized upon everlasting ideas, and set a wonderful instance of their protection. Mark them!
Totally appreciating the hardship to be encountered, firmly believing in the appropriate of their trigger, honorably inviting the scrutiny of an on-looking world, reverently interesting to heaven to attest their sincerity, soundly comprehending the solemn accountability they had been about to imagine, correctly measuring the horrible odds towards them, your fathers, the fathers of this republic, did, most intentionally, beneath the inspiration of a wonderful patriotism, and with a chic religion within the nice ideas of justice and freedom, lay deep the corner-stone of the nationwide superstructure, which has risen and nonetheless rises in grandeur round you.
Of this elementary work, this present day is the anniversary. Our eyes are met with demonstrations of joyous enthusiasm. Banners and pennants wave exultingly on the breeze. The din of enterprise, too, is hushed. Even Mammon appears to have quitted his grasp on this present day. The ear-piercing fife and the stirring drum unite their accents with the ascending peal of a thousand church bells. Prayers are made, hymns are sung, and sermons are preached in honor of this present day; whereas the short martial tramp of an incredible and multitudinous nation, echoed again by all of the hills, valleys and mountains of an enormous continent, bespeak the event certainly one of thrilling and common curiosity — a nation’s jubilee.
Associates and residents, I needn’t enter additional into the causes which led to this anniversary. Lots of you perceive them higher than I do. You might instruct me in regard to them. That may be a department of data by which you’re feeling, maybe, a a lot deeper curiosity than your speaker. The causes which led to the separation of the colonies from the British crown have by no means lacked for a tongue. They’ve all been taught in your widespread colleges, narrated at your firesides, unfolded out of your pulpits, and thundered out of your legislative halls, and are as acquainted to you as family phrases. They kind the staple of your nationwide poetry and eloquence.
I keep in mind, additionally, that, as a individuals, Individuals are remarkably acquainted with all info which make in their very own favor. That is esteemed by some as a nationwide trait — maybe a nationwide weak spot. It’s a reality, that no matter makes for the wealth or for the status of Individuals, and will be had low cost! can be discovered by Individuals. I shall not be charged with slandering Individuals, if I say I feel the American facet of any query could also be safely left in American palms.
I depart, due to this fact, the good deeds of your fathers to different gents whose declare to have been recurrently descended can be much less prone to be disputed than mine!
My enterprise, if I’ve any right here to-day, is with the current. The accepted time with God and his trigger is the ever-living now.
Belief no future, nonetheless nice,
Let the lifeless previous bury its lifeless;
Act, act within the residing current,
Coronary heart inside, and God overhead.
We have now to do with the previous solely as we will make it helpful to the current and to the long run. To all inspiring motives, to noble deeds which will be gained from the previous, we’re welcome. However now could be the time, the vital time. Your fathers have lived, died, and have performed their work, and have performed a lot of it effectively. You reside and should die, and you will need to do your work. You haven’t any proper to get pleasure from a toddler’s share within the labor of your fathers, until your kids are to be blest by your labors. You haven’t any proper to wear down and waste the hard-earned fame of your fathers to cowl your indolence. Sydney Smith tells us that males seldom eulogize the knowledge and virtues of their fathers, however to excuse some folly or wickedness of their very own. This reality shouldn’t be a uncertain one. There are illustrations of it close to and distant, historic and trendy. It was modern, a whole bunch of years in the past, for the youngsters of Jacob to boast, now we have “Abraham to our father,” once they had lengthy misplaced Abraham’s religion and spirit. That folks contented themselves beneath the shadow of Abraham’s nice title, whereas they repudiated the deeds which made his title nice. Want I remind you {that a} related factor is being performed throughout this nation to-day? Want I inform you that the Jews aren’t the one individuals who constructed the tombs of the prophets, and garnished the sepulchres of the righteous? Washington couldn’t die until he had damaged the chains of his slaves. But his monument is constructed up by the worth of human blood, and the merchants within the our bodies and souls of males shout — “We have now Washington to our father.” — Alas! that it needs to be so; but so it’s.
The evil that males do, lives after them, The great is oft-interred with their bones.
Fellow-citizens, pardon me, permit me to ask, why am I known as upon to talk right here to-day? What have I, or these I signify, to do together with your nationwide independence? Are the good ideas of political freedom and of pure justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, prolonged to us? and am I, due to this fact, known as upon to deliver our humble providing to the nationwide altar, and to admit the advantages and specific religious gratitude for the blessings ensuing out of your independence to us?
Would to God, each on your sakes and ours, that an affirmative reply could possibly be honestly returned to those questions! Then would my job be mild, and my burden simple and pleasant. For who’s there so chilly, {that a} nation’s sympathy couldn’t heat him? Who so stubborn and lifeless to the claims of gratitude, that might not fortunately acknowledge such priceless advantages? Who so stolid and egocentric, that might not give his voice to swell the hallelujahs of a nation’s jubilee, when the chains of servitude had been torn from his limbs? I’m not that man. In a case like that, the dumb may eloquently converse, and the “lame man leap as an hart.”
However, such shouldn’t be the state of the case. I say it with a tragic sense of the disparity between us. I’m not included inside the pale of this wonderful anniversary! Your excessive independence solely reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings by which you, this present day, rejoice, aren’t loved in widespread. — The wealthy inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The daylight that introduced life and therapeutic to you, has introduced stripes and loss of life to me. This Fourth (of) July is yours, not mine. Chances are you’ll rejoice, I have to mourn. To pull a person in fetters into the grand illuminated temple of liberty, and name upon him to affix you in joyous anthems, had been inhuman mockery and sacrilegious irony. Do you imply, residents, to mock me, by asking me to talk to-day? In that case, there’s a parallel to your conduct. And let me warn you that it’s harmful to repeat the instance of a nation whose crimes, reducing as much as heaven, had been thrown down by the breath of the Almighty, burying that nation in irrecoverable break! I can to-day take up the plaintive lament of a peeled and woe-smitten individuals!
“By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yea! we wept after we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows within the midst thereof. For there, they that carried us away captive, required of us a music; they usually who wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of many songs of Zion. How can we sing the Lord’s music in an odd land? If I neglect thee, O Jerusalem, let my proper hand neglect her crafty. If I don’t keep in mind thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth.”
Fellow-citizens; above your nationwide, tumultuous pleasure, I hear the mournful wail of thousands and thousands! whose chains, heavy and grievous yesterday, are, to-day, rendered extra insupportable by the jubilee shouts that attain them. If I do neglect, if I don’t faithfully keep in mind these bleeding kids of sorrow this present day, “might my proper hand neglect her crafty, and will my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth!” To neglect them, to cross flippantly over their wrongs, and to chime in with the favored theme, could be treason most scandalous and surprising, and would make me a reproach earlier than God and the world. My topic, then fellow-citizens, is AMERICAN SLAVERY. I shall see, this present day, and its well-liked traits, from the slave’s viewpoint. Standing, there, recognized with the American bondman, making his wrongs mine, I don’t hesitate to declare, with all my soul, that the character and conduct of this nation by no means appeared blacker to me than on this 4th of July! Whether or not we flip to the declarations of the previous, or to the professions of the current, the conduct of the nation appears equally hideous and revolting. America is fake to the previous, false to the current, and solemnly binds herself to be false to the long run. Standing with God and the crushed and bleeding slave on this event, I’ll, within the title of humanity which is outraged, within the title of liberty which is fettered, within the title of the structure and the Bible, that are disregarded and trampled upon, dare to name in query and to denounce, with all of the emphasis I can command, every part that serves to perpetuate slavery — the good sin and disgrace of America! “I can’t equivocate; I can’t excuse;” I’ll use the severest language I can command; and but not one phrase shall escape me that any man, whose judgment shouldn’t be blinded by prejudice, or who shouldn’t be at coronary heart a slaveholder, shall not confess to be proper and simply.
However I fancy I hear some certainly one of my viewers say, it’s simply on this circumstance that you simply and your brother abolitionists fail to make a positive impression on the general public thoughts. Would you argue extra, and denounce much less, would you persuade extra, and rebuke much less, your trigger could be more likely to succeed. However, I submit, the place all is apparent there may be nothing to be argued. What level within the anti-slavery creed would you’ve gotten me argue? On what department of the topic do the individuals of this nation want mild? Should I undertake to show that the slave is a person? That time is conceded already. No one doubts it. The slaveholders themselves acknowledge it within the enactment of legal guidelines for his or her authorities. They acknowledge it once they punish disobedience on the a part of the slave. There are seventy-two crimes within the State of Virginia, which, if dedicated by a black man, (irrespective of how ignorant he be), topic him to the punishment of loss of life; whereas solely two of the identical crimes will topic a white man to the like punishment. What is that this however the acknowledgement that the slave is an ethical, mental and accountable being? The manhood of the slave is conceded. It’s admitted in the truth that Southern statute books are lined with enactments forbidding, beneath extreme fines and penalties, the educating of the slave to learn or to put in writing. When you may level to any such legal guidelines, in reference to the beasts of the sphere, then I’ll consent to argue the manhood of the slave. When the canine in your streets, when the fowls of the air, when the cattle in your hills, when the fish of the ocean, and the reptiles that crawl, shall be unable to tell apart the slave from a brute, then will I argue with you that the slave is a person!
For the current, it is sufficient to affirm the equal manhood of the Negro race. Is it not astonishing that, whereas we’re ploughing, planting and reaping, utilizing every kind of mechanical instruments, erecting homes, setting up bridges, constructing ships, working in metals of brass, iron, copper, silver and gold; that, whereas we’re studying, writing and cyphering, appearing as clerks, retailers and secretaries, having amongst us attorneys, medical doctors, ministers, poets, authors, editors, orators and academics; that, whereas we’re engaged in all method of enterprises widespread to different males, digging gold in California, capturing the whale within the Pacific, feeding sheep and cattle on the hill-side, residing, shifting, appearing, considering, planning, residing in households as husbands, wives and youngsters, and, above all, confessing and worshipping the Christian’s God, and searching hopefully for all times and immortality past the grave, we’re known as upon to show that we’re males!
Would you’ve gotten me argue that man is entitled to liberty? that he’s the rightful proprietor of his personal physique? You’ve gotten already declared it. Should I argue the wrongfulness of slavery? Is {that a} query for Republicans? Is it to be settled by the foundations of logic and argumentation, as a matter beset with nice issue, involving a uncertain software of the precept of justice, exhausting to be understood? How ought to I look to-day, within the presence of Individuals, dividing, and subdividing a discourse, to point out that males have a pure proper to freedom? talking of it comparatively, and positively, negatively, and affirmatively. To take action, could be to make myself ridiculous, and to supply an insult to your understanding. — There may be not a person beneath the cover of heaven, that doesn’t know that slavery is unsuitable for him.
What, am I to argue that it’s unsuitable to make males brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them with out wages, to maintain them unaware of their relations to their fellow males, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with the lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hunt them with canine, to promote them at public sale, to sunder their households, to knock out their enamel, to burn their flesh, to starve them into obedience and submission to their masters? Should I argue {that a} system thus marked with blood, and stained with air pollution, is unsuitable? No! I can’t. I’ve higher employments for my time and energy than such arguments would indicate.
What, then, stays to be argued? Is it that slavery shouldn’t be divine; that God didn’t set up it; that our medical doctors of divinity are mistaken? There may be blasphemy within the thought. That which is inhuman, can’t be divine! Who can cause on such a proposition? They that may, might; I can’t. The time for such argument is handed.
At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is required. O! had I the flexibility, and will I attain the nation’s ear, I might, to-day, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it’s not mild that’s wanted, however hearth; it’s not the mild bathe, however thunder. We’d like the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The sensation of the nation should be quickened; the conscience of the nation should be roused; the propriety of the nation should be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation should be uncovered; and its crimes towards God and man should be proclaimed and denounced.
What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I reply: a day that reveals to him, greater than all different days within the 12 months, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he’s the fixed sufferer. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your nationwide greatness, swelling vainness; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hole mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all of your spiritual parade, and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy — a skinny veil to cowl up crimes which might shame a nation of savages. There may be not a nation on the earth responsible of practices, extra surprising and bloody, than are the individuals of those United States, at this very hour.
Go the place you could, search the place you’ll, roam by all of the monarchies and despotisms of the outdated world, journey by South America, get hold of each abuse, and when you’ve gotten discovered the final, lay your info by the facet of the on a regular basis practices of this nation, and you’ll say with me, that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns with out a rival.
Take the American slave-trade, which, we’re instructed by the papers, is very affluent simply now. Ex-Senator Benton tells us that the worth of males was by no means larger than now. He mentions the very fact to point out that slavery is in no hazard. This commerce is likely one of the peculiarities of American establishments. It’s carried on in all the massive cities and cities in one-half of this confederacy; and thousands and thousands are pocketed yearly, by sellers on this horrid visitors. In a number of states, this commerce is a chief supply of wealth. It’s known as (in contradistinction to the overseas slave-trade) “the interior slave commerce.” It’s, in all probability, known as so, too, with the intention to divert from it the horror with which the overseas slave-trade is contemplated. That commerce has lengthy since been denounced by this authorities, as piracy. It has been denounced with burning phrases, from the excessive locations of the nation, as an execrable visitors. To arrest it, to place an finish to it, this nation retains a squadron, at immense value, on the coast of Africa. In every single place, on this nation, it’s secure to talk of this overseas slave-trade, as a most inhuman visitors, opposed alike to the legal guidelines of God and of man. The obligation to extirpate and destroy it, is admitted even by our DOCTORS OF DIVINITY. With a view to put an finish to it, a few of these final have consented that their coloured brethren (nominally free) ought to depart this nation, and set up themselves on the western coast of Africa! It’s, nonetheless, a notable indisputable fact that, whereas a lot execration is poured out by Individuals upon these engaged within the overseas slave-trade, the boys engaged within the slave-trade between the states cross with out condemnation, and their enterprise is deemed honorable.
Behold the sensible operation of this inside slave-trade, the American slave-trade, sustained by American politics and America faith. Right here you will notice women and men reared like swine for the market. You recognize what’s a swine-drover? I’ll present you a man-drover. They inhabit all our Southern States. They perambulate the nation, and crowd the highways of the nation, with droves of human inventory. You will note certainly one of these human flesh-jobbers, armed with pistol, whip and bowie-knife, driving an organization of 100 males, ladies, and youngsters, from the Potomac to the slave market at New Orleans. These wretched persons are to be bought singly, or in tons, to go well with purchasers. They’re meals for the cotton-field, and the lethal sugar-mill. Mark the unhappy procession, because it strikes wearily alongside, and the inhuman wretch who drives them. Hear his savage yells and his blood-chilling oaths, as he hurries on his affrighted captives! There, see the outdated man, with locks thinned and grey. Forged one look, for those who please, upon that younger mom, whose shoulders are naked to the scorching solar, her briny tears falling on the forehead of the babe in her arms. See, too, that lady of 13, weeping, sure! weeping, as she thinks of the mom from whom she has been torn! The drove strikes tardily. Warmth and sorrow have practically consumed their energy; instantly you hear a fast snap, just like the discharge of a rifle; the fetters clank, and the chain rattles concurrently; your ears are saluted with a scream, that appears to have torn its solution to the middle of your soul! The crack you heard, was the sound of the slave-whip; the scream you heard, was from the girl you noticed with the babe. Her velocity had faltered beneath the load of her little one and her chains! that gash on her shoulder tells her to maneuver on. Comply with the drove to New Orleans. Attend the public sale; see males examined like horses; see the types of ladies rudely and brutally uncovered to the surprising gaze of American slave-buyers. See this drove bought and separated without end; and always remember the deep, unhappy sobs that arose from that scattered multitude. Inform me residents, WHERE, beneath the solar, you may witness a spectacle extra fiendish and surprising. But that is however a look on the American slave-trade, because it exists, at this second, within the ruling a part of america.
I used to be born amid such sights and scenes. To me the American slave-trade is a horrible actuality. When a toddler, my soul was usually pierced with a way of its horrors. I lived on Philpot Road, Fell’s Level, Baltimore, and have watched from the wharves, the slave ships within the Basin, anchored from the shore, with their cargoes of human flesh, ready for favorable winds to waft them down the Chesapeake. There was, at the moment, a grand slave mart saved on the head of Pratt Road, by Austin Woldfolk. His brokers had been despatched into each city and county in Maryland, saying their arrival, by the papers, and on flaming “hand-bills,” headed CASH FOR NEGROES. These males had been usually effectively dressed males, and really charming of their manners. Ever able to drink, to deal with, and to gamble. The destiny of many a slave has depended upon the flip of a single card; and plenty of a toddler has been snatched from the arms of its mom by bargains organized in a state of brutal drunkenness.
The flesh-mongers collect up their victims by dozens, and drive them, chained, to the overall depot at Baltimore. When a ample quantity have been collected right here, a ship is chartered, for the aim of conveying the forlorn crew to Cellular, or to New Orleans. From the slave jail to the ship, they’re normally pushed within the darkness of night time; for because the antislavery agitation, a sure warning is noticed.
Within the deep nonetheless darkness of midnight, I’ve been usually aroused by the lifeless heavy footsteps, and the piteous cries of the chained gangs that handed our door. The anguish of my boyish coronary heart was intense; and I used to be usually consoled, when talking to my mistress within the morning, to listen to her say that the customized was very depraved; that she hated to listen to the rattle of the chains, and the heart-rending cries. I used to be glad to seek out one who sympathized with me in my horror.
Fellow-citizens, this murderous visitors is, to-day, in lively operation on this boasted republic. Within the solitude of my spirit, I see clouds of mud raised on the highways of the South; I see the bleeding footsteps; I hear the doleful wail of fettered humanity, on the best way to the slave-markets, the place the victims are to be bought like horses, sheep, and swine, knocked off to the very best bidder. There I see the tenderest ties ruthlessly damaged, to gratify the lust, caprice and rapacity of the consumers and sellers of males. My soul sickens on the sight.
Is that this the land your Fathers cherished,
The liberty which they toiled to win?
Is that this the earth whereon they moved?
Are these the graves they slumber in?
However a nonetheless extra inhuman, disgraceful, and scandalous state of issues stays to be offered. By an act of the American Congress, not but two years outdated, slavery has been nationalized in its most horrible and revolting kind. By that act, Mason and Dixon’s line has been obliterated; New York has turn out to be as Virginia; and the facility to carry, hunt, and promote males, ladies, and youngsters as slaves stays not a mere state establishment, however is now an establishment of the entire United States. The ability is co-extensive with the Star-Spangled Banner and American Christianity. The place these go, might also go the cruel slave-hunter. The place these are, man shouldn’t be sacred. He’s a chook for the sportsman’s gun. By that almost all foul and fiendish of all human decrees, the freedom and particular person of each man are put in peril. Your broad republican area is looking floor for males. Not for thieves and robbers, enemies of society, merely, however for males responsible of no crime. Your lawmakers have commanded all good residents to have interaction on this hellish sport. Your President, your Secretary of State, our lords, nobles, and ecclesiastics, implement, as an obligation you owe to your free and wonderful nation, and to your God, that you simply do that accursed factor. Not fewer than forty Individuals have, inside the previous two years, been hunted down and, with out a second’s warning, hurried away in chains, and consigned to slavery and excruciating torture. A few of these have had wives and youngsters, depending on them for bread; however of this, no account was made. The suitable of the hunter to his prey stands superior to the appropriate of marriage, and to all rights on this republic, the rights of God included! For black males there are neither regulation, justice, humanity, not faith. The Fugitive Slave Regulation makes mercy to them against the law; and bribes the choose who tries them. An American choose will get ten {dollars} for each sufferer he consigns to slavery, and 5, when he fails to take action. The oath of any two villains is ample, beneath this hell-black enactment, to ship probably the most pious and exemplary black man into the remorseless jaws of slavery! His personal testimony is nothing. He can deliver no witnesses for himself. The minister of American justice is certain by the regulation to listen to however one facet; and that facet, is the facet of the oppressor. Let this damning reality be perpetually instructed. Let or not it’s thundered world wide, that, in tyrant-killing, king-hating, people-loving, democratic, Christian America, the seats of justice are crammed with judges, who maintain their places of work beneath an open and palpable bribe, and are certain, in deciding within the case of a person’s liberty, hear solely his accusers!
In obtrusive violation of justice, in shameless disregard of the types of administering regulation, in crafty association to entrap the defenseless, and in diabolical intent, this Fugitive Slave Regulation stands alone within the annals of tyrannical laws. I doubt if there be one other nation on the globe, having the brass and the baseness to place such a regulation on the statute-book. If any man on this meeting thinks in another way from me on this matter, and feels capable of disprove my statements, I’ll gladly confront him at any appropriate time and place he might choose.
I take this regulation to be one of many grossest infringements of Christian Liberty, and, if the church buildings and ministers of our nation weren’t stupidly blind, or most wickedly detached, they, too, would so regard it.
On the very second that they’re thanking God for the enjoyment of civil and spiritual liberty, and for the appropriate to worship God in keeping with the dictates of their very own consciences, they’re completely silent in respect to a regulation which robs faith of its chief significance, and makes it completely nugatory to a world mendacity in wickedness. Did this regulation concern the “mint, anise, and cumin” — abridge the appropriate to sing psalms, to partake of the sacrament, or to have interaction in any of the ceremonies of faith, it will be obsessed on the thunder of a thousand pulpits. A basic shout would go up from the church, demanding repeal, repeal, immediate repeal! — And it will go exhausting with that politician who presumed to solicit the votes of the individuals with out inscribing this motto on his banner. Additional, if this demand weren’t complied with, one other Scotland could be added to the historical past of non secular liberty, and the strict outdated Covenanters could be thrown into the shade. A John Knox could be seen at each church door, and heard from each pulpit, and Fillmore would haven’t any extra quarter than was proven by Knox, to the attractive, however treacherous queen Mary of Scotland. The truth that the church of our nation, (with fractional exceptions), doesn’t esteem “the Fugitive Slave Regulation” as a declaration of battle towards spiritual liberty, implies that that church regards faith merely as a type of worship, an empty ceremony, and never an important precept, requiring lively benevolence, justice, love and good will in the direction of man. It esteems sacrifice above mercy; psalm-singing above proper doing; solemn conferences above sensible righteousness. A worship that may be carried out by individuals who refuse to provide shelter to the houseless, to provide bread to the hungry, clothes to the bare, and who enjoin obedience to a regulation forbidding these acts of mercy, is a curse, not a blessing to mankind. The Bible addresses all such individuals as “scribes, Pharisees, hypocrites, who pay tithe of mint, anise, and cumin, and have omitted the weightier issues of the regulation, judgment, mercy and religion.”
However the church of this nation shouldn’t be solely detached to the wrongs of the slave, it really takes sides with the oppressors. It has made itself the bulwark of American slavery, and the protect of American slave-hunters. Lots of its most eloquent Divines. who stand because the very lights of the church, have shamelessly given the sanction of faith and the Bible to the entire slave system. They’ve taught that man might, correctly, be a slave; that the relation of grasp and slave is ordained of God; that to ship again an escaped bondman to his grasp is clearly the obligation of all of the followers of the Lord Jesus Christ; and this horrible blasphemy is palmed off upon the world for Christianity.
Personally, I might say, welcome infidelity! welcome atheism! welcome something! instead of the gospel, as preached by these Divines! They convert the very title of faith into an engine of tyranny, and barbarous cruelty, and serve to verify extra infidels, on this age, than all of the infidel writings of Thomas Paine, Voltaire, and Bolingbroke, put collectively, have performed! These ministers make faith a chilly and flinty-hearted factor, having neither ideas of proper motion, nor bowels of compassion. They strip the love of God of its magnificence, and depart the throng of faith an enormous, horrible, repulsive kind. It’s a faith for oppressors, tyrants, man-stealers, and thugs. It isn’t that “pure and undefiled faith” which is from above, and which is “first pure, then peaceful, simple to be urged, stuffed with mercy and good fruits, with out partiality, and with out hypocrisy.” However a faith which favors the wealthy towards the poor; which exalts the proud above the standard; which divides mankind into two courses, tyrants and slaves; which says to the person in chains, keep there; and to the oppressor, oppress on; it’s a faith which can be professed and loved by all of the robbers and enslavers of mankind; it makes God a respecter of individuals, denies his fatherhood of the race, and tramples within the mud the good reality of the brotherhood of man. All this we affirm to be true of the favored church, and the favored worship of our land and nation — a faith, a church, and a worship which, on the authority of impressed knowledge, we pronounce to be an abomination within the sight of God. Within the language of Isaiah, the American church is likely to be effectively addressed, “Convey no extra useless ablations; incense is an abomination unto me: the brand new moons and Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I can’t away with; it’s iniquity even the solemn assembly. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth. They’re a hassle to me; I’m weary to bear them; and when ye unfold forth your palms I’ll cover mine eyes from you. Yea! when ye make many prayers, I can’t hear. YOUR HANDS ARE FULL OF BLOOD; stop to do evil, study to do effectively; search judgment; relieve the oppressed; choose for the fatherless; plead for the widow.”
The American church is responsible, when considered in reference to what it’s doing to uphold slavery; however it’s superlatively responsible when considered in reference to its skill to abolish slavery. The sin of which it’s responsible is certainly one of omission in addition to of fee. Albert Barnes however uttered what the widespread sense of each man in any respect observant of the particular state of the case will obtain as reality, when he declared that “There is no such thing as a energy out of the church that might maintain slavery an hour, if it weren’t sustained in it.”
Let the spiritual press, the pulpit, the Sunday faculty, the convention assembly, the good ecclesiastical, missionary, Bible and tract associations of the land array their immense powers towards slavery and slave-holding; and the entire system of crime and blood could be scattered to the winds; and that they don’t do that includes them in probably the most terrible accountability of which the thoughts can conceive.
In prosecuting the anti-slavery enterprise, now we have been requested to spare the church, to spare the ministry; however how, we ask, may such a factor be performed? We’re met on the edge of our efforts for the redemption of the slave, by the church and ministry of the nation, in battle arrayed towards us; and we’re compelled to struggle or flee. From what quarter, I urge to know, has proceeded a hearth so lethal upon our ranks, over the past two years, as from the Northern pulpit? Because the champions of oppressors, the chosen males of American theology have appeared — males, honored for his or her so-called piety, and their actual studying. The Lords of Buffalo, the Springs of New York, the Lathrops of Auburn, the Coxes and Spencers of Brooklyn, the Gannets and Sharps of Boston, the Deweys of Washington, and different nice spiritual lights of the land have, in utter denial of the authority of Him by whom they professed to be known as to the ministry, intentionally taught us, towards the instance or the Hebrews and towards the remonstrance of the Apostles, they train that we should obey man’s regulation earlier than the regulation of God.
My spirit wearies of such blasphemy; and the way such males will be supported, because the “standing varieties and representatives of Jesus Christ,” is a thriller which I depart others to penetrate. In talking of the American church, nonetheless, let or not it’s distinctly understood that I imply the good mass of the spiritual organizations of our land. There are exceptions, and I thank God that there are. Noble males could also be discovered, scattered throughout these Northern States, of whom Henry Ward Beecher of Brooklyn, Samuel J. Might of Syracuse, and my esteemed good friend (Rev. R. R. Raymond) on the platform, are shining examples; and let me say additional, that upon these males lies the obligation to encourage our ranks with excessive spiritual religion and zeal, and to cheer us on within the nice mission of the slave’s redemption from his chains.
One is struck with the distinction between the perspective of the American church in the direction of the anti-slavery motion, and that occupied by the church buildings in England in the direction of an identical motion in that nation. There, the church, true to its mission of ameliorating, elevating, and bettering the situation of mankind, got here ahead promptly, certain up the injuries of the West Indian slave, and restored him to his liberty. There, the query of emancipation was a excessive spiritual query. It was demanded, within the title of humanity, and in keeping with the regulation of the residing God. The Sharps, the Clarksons, the Wilberforces, the Buxtons, and Burchells and the Knibbs, had been alike well-known for his or her piety, and for his or her philanthropy. The anti-slavery motion there was not an anti-church motion, given that the church took its full share in prosecuting that motion: and the anti-slavery motion on this nation will stop to be an anti-church motion, when the church of this nation shall assume a positive, as an alternative of a hostile place in the direction of that motion. Individuals! your republican politics, not lower than your republican faith, are flagrantly inconsistent. You boast of your love of liberty, your superior civilization, and your pure Christianity, whereas the entire political energy of the nation (as embodied within the two nice political events), is solemnly pledged to assist and perpetuate the enslavement of three thousands and thousands of your countrymen. You hurl your anathemas on the topped headed tyrants of Russia and Austria, and satisfaction yourselves in your Democratic establishments, whilst you yourselves consent to be the mere instruments and body-guards of the tyrants of Virginia and Carolina. You invite to your shores fugitives of oppression from overseas, honor them with banquets, greet them with ovations, cheer them, toast them, salute them, shield them, and pour out your cash to them like water; however the fugitives from your personal land you promote, hunt, arrest, shoot and kill. You glory in your refinement and your common schooling but you keep a system as barbarous and dreadful as ever stained the character of a nation — a system begun in avarice, supported in satisfaction, and perpetuated in cruelty. You shed tears over fallen Hungary, and make the unhappy story of her wrongs the theme of your poets, statesmen and orators, until your gallant sons are able to fly to arms to vindicate her trigger towards her oppressors; however, in regard to the ten thousand wrongs of the American slave, you’d implement the strictest silence, and would hail him as an enemy of the nation who dares to make these wrongs the topic of public discourse! You’re all on hearth on the point out of liberty for France or for Eire; however are as chilly as an iceberg on the considered liberty for the enslaved of America. You discourse eloquently on the dignity of labor; but, you maintain a system which, in its very essence, casts a stigma upon labor. You’ll be able to naked your bosom to the storm of British artillery to throw off a threepenny tax on tea; and but wring the final hard-earned farthing from the grasp of the black laborers of your nation. You profess to imagine “that, of 1 blood, God made all nations of males to dwell on the face of all of the earth,” and hath commanded all males, in every single place to like each other; but you notoriously hate, (and glory in your hatred), all males whose skins aren’t coloured like your personal. You declare, earlier than the world, and are understood by the world to declare, that you simply “maintain these truths to be self evident, that each one males are created equal; and are endowed by their Creator with sure inalienable rights; and that, amongst these are, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;” and but, you maintain securely, in a bondage which, in keeping with your personal Thomas Jefferson, “is worse than ages of that which your fathers rose in revolt to oppose,” a seventh a part of the inhabitants of your nation.
Fellow-citizens! I can’t enlarge additional in your nationwide inconsistencies. The existence of slavery on this nation manufacturers your republicanism as a sham, your humanity as a base pretence, and your Christianity as a lie. It destroys your ethical energy overseas; it corrupts your politicians at residence. It saps the inspiration of faith; it makes your title a hissing, and a bye-word to a mocking earth. It’s the antagonistic pressure in your authorities, the one factor that significantly disturbs and endangers your Union. It fetters your progress; it’s the enemy of enchancment, the lethal foe of schooling; it fosters satisfaction; it breeds insolence; it promotes vice; it shelters crime; it’s a curse to the earth that helps it; and but, you cling to it, as if it had been the sheet anchor of all of your hopes. Oh! be warned! be warned! a horrible reptile is coiled up in your nation’s bosom; the venomous creature is nursing on the tender breast of your youthful republic; for the love of God, tear away, and fling from you the hideous monster, and let the load of twenty thousands and thousands crush and destroy it without end!
However it’s answered in reply to all this, that exactly what I’ve now denounced is, in actual fact, assured and sanctioned by the Structure of america; that the appropriate to carry and to hunt slaves is part of that Structure framed by the illustrious Fathers of this Republic.
Then, I dare to affirm, however all I’ve stated earlier than, your fathers stooped, basely stooped
To palter with us in a double sense:
And maintain the phrase of promise to the ear,
However break it to the guts.
And as an alternative of being the trustworthy males I’ve earlier than declared them to be, they had been the veriest imposters that ever practiced on mankind. That is the inevitable conclusion, and from it there is no such thing as a escape. However I differ from those that cost this baseness on the framers of the Structure of america. It’s a slander upon their reminiscence, no less than, so I imagine. There may be not time now to argue the constitutional query at size — nor have I the flexibility to debate it because it should be mentioned. The topic has been dealt with with masterly energy by Lysander Spooner, Esq., by William Goodell, by Samuel E. Sewall, Esq., and final, although not least, by Gerritt Smith, Esq. These gents have, as I feel, absolutely and clearly vindicated the Structure from any design to assist slavery for an hour.
Fellow-citizens! there is no such thing as a matter in respect to which, the individuals of the North have allowed themselves to be so ruinously imposed upon, as that of the pro-slavery character of the Structure. In that instrument I maintain there may be neither warrant, license, nor sanction of the hateful factor; however, interpreted because it should be interpreted, the Structure is a GLORIOUS LIBERTY DOCUMENT. Learn its preamble, contemplate its functions. Is slavery amongst them? Is it on the gateway? or is it within the temple? It’s neither. Whereas I don’t intend to argue this query on the current event, let me ask, if or not it’s not considerably singular that, if the Structure had been supposed to be, by its framers and adopters, a slave-holding instrument, why neither slavery, slaveholding, nor slave can anyplace be present in it. What could be considered an instrument, drawn up, legally drawn up, for the aim of entitling the town of Rochester to a observe of land, by which no point out of land was made? Now, there are particular guidelines of interpretation, for the right understanding of all authorized devices. These guidelines are effectively established. They’re plain, common sense guidelines, akin to you and I, and all of us, can perceive and apply, with out having handed years within the examine of regulation. I scout the concept that the query of the constitutionality or unconstitutionality of slavery shouldn’t be a query for the individuals. I maintain that each American citizen has a proper to kind an opinion of the structure, and to propagate that opinion, and to make use of all honorable means to make his opinion the prevailing one. With out this proper, the freedom of an American citizen could be as insecure as that of a Frenchman. Ex-Vice-President Dallas tells us that the Structure is an object to which no American thoughts will be too attentive, and no American coronary heart too devoted. He additional says, the Structure, in its phrases, is apparent and intelligible, and is supposed for the home-bred, unsophisticated understandings of our fellow-citizens. Senator Berrien inform us that the Structure is the basic regulation, that which controls all others. The constitution of our liberties, which each citizen has a private curiosity in understanding totally. The testimony of Senator Breese, Lewis Cass, and plenty of others that is likely to be named, who’re in every single place esteemed as sound attorneys, so regard the structure. I take it, due to this fact, that it’s not presumption in a personal citizen to kind an opinion of that instrument.
Now, take the Structure in keeping with its plain studying, and I defy the presentation of a single pro-slavery clause in it. Then again it is going to be discovered to include ideas and functions, solely hostile to the existence of slavery.
I’ve detained my viewers solely too lengthy already. At some future interval I’ll gladly avail myself of a chance to provide this topic a full and honest dialogue.
Enable me to say, in conclusion, however the darkish image I’ve this present day offered of the state of the nation, I don’t despair of this nation. There are forces in operation, which should inevitably work the downfall of slavery. “The arm of the Lord shouldn’t be shortened,” and the doom of slavery is definite. I, due to this fact, depart off the place I started, with hope. Whereas drawing encouragement from the Declaration of Independence, the good ideas it accommodates, and the genius of American Establishments, my spirit can be cheered by the apparent tendencies of the age. Nations don’t now stand in the identical relation to one another that they did ages in the past. No nation can now shut itself up from the encompassing world, and trot spherical in the identical outdated path of its fathers with out interference. The time was when such could possibly be performed. Lengthy established customs of hurtful character may previously fence themselves in, and do their evil work with social impunity. Information was then confined and loved by the privileged few, and the multitude walked on in psychological darkness. However a change has now come over the affairs of mankind. Walled cities and empires have turn out to be retro. The arm of commerce has borne away the gates of the sturdy metropolis. Intelligence is penetrating the darkest corners of the globe. It makes its pathway over and beneath the ocean, in addition to on the earth. Wind, steam, and lightning are its chartered brokers. Oceans not divide, however hyperlink nations collectively. From Boston to London is now a vacation tour. Area is relatively annihilated. Ideas expressed on one facet of the Atlantic, are distinctly heard on the opposite. The far off and nearly fabulous Pacific rolls in grandeur at our toes. The Celestial Empire, the thriller of ages, is being solved. The fiat of the Almighty, “Let there be Mild,” has not but spent its pressure. No abuse, no outrage whether or not in style, sport or avarice, can now cover itself from the all-pervading mild. The iron shoe, and crippled foot of China should be seen, in distinction with nature. Africa should rise and placed on her but unwoven garment. “Ethiopia shall stretch out her hand unto God.” Within the fervent aspirations of William Lloyd Garrison, I say, and let each coronary heart take part saying it:
God velocity the 12 months of jubilee
The vast world o’er
When from their galling chains let loose,
Th’ oppress’d shall vilely bend the knee,
And put on the yoke of tyranny
Like brutes no extra.
That 12 months will come, and freedom’s reign,
To man his plundered fights once more
Restore.
God velocity the day when human blood
Shall stop to circulate!
In each clime be understood,
The claims of human brotherhood,
And every return for evil, good,
Not blow for blow;
That day will come all feuds to finish.
And alter right into a devoted good friend
Every foe.
God velocity the hour, the wonderful hour,
When none on earth
Shall train a lordly energy,
Nor in a tyrant’s presence cower;
However all to manhood’s stature tower,
By equal start!
That hour will come, to every, to all,
And from his prison-house, the thrall
Go forth.
Till that 12 months, day, hour, arrive,
With head, and coronary heart, and hand I’ll attempt,
To interrupt the rod, and rend the gyve,
The spoiler of his prey deprive —
So witness Heaven!
And by no means from my chosen put up,
Whate’er the peril or the price,
Be pushed.
