Presidential visits to Johnson County

Grant Opened Merriam Park

First, former President Ulysses S. Grant (1869 – 1877) visited in July 1880. Located in the opening Merriam Park, Merriam, Kansas Victoria Park (Entertainment Park).

Merriam Park was planned and managed by Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf Rail. The opening ceremony was the abduction. FDR’s Olathe Whistle-Stop Speech

On October 13, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (in 1933 – 1945) became the head of the first meeting to Johnson County. With the November 1936 elections, Rooseveltin made a stop in the Roosevelt’s train return from a campaign tour in Colorado. Stop Kanser Kansas Governor and Olate resident, was organized by George H. Hodges.

Before the visit of the President, the night, school and shops were announced a night. Newspapers waited for thousands of people to come to the station. Roosevelt, before returning to Washington, conveyed a speech from behind the train, and there is no known photos of the OLATHE stop without returning to the DC, but notes the place today.

Eisenhower’s planned trip

In January 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (in the 1953-1961) private aircraft, COLUMBINE IIIOlathe Military Air Road Station (Onas) made an unplanned landing. Eisenhower, the pilots went to Kansas City Airport after the death of his brother on the sea station due to dangerous heavy fog. The visit was documented in the president’s destination book and includes a photo of the museum collection COLUMBINE III and the pilot in the comb scan. Given the personal essence of Eisenhower’s visit to the region, he did not believe that he gave any public addresses while in Johnson County.

President Hope, campaign for JFK

To hear the Senator Kennedy, the Pasynee mission was expelled to the eastern high school cafeteria and announced vision for the presidency and stained for Kansas politicians. It is interesting that cafes were selected because the canteen was used to give the school home. After his speech, Kennedy shaken his hand with 10 minutes without returning to the campaign trail. Truman connections?

Most likely, Harry S. Truman, a resident of Independence, Johnson County, most likely in his career. Unfortunately, we do not have a record of such visits, so we have reached the Truman Library for help. Johnson County is more tied to Kansas, more than Truman’s time today. Now “Only” is a city around Kansas, but is a place with its own right. As the District Population, Diversity and Economy continue to grow in the economy, the presidents and sites will not be a surprise visiting the more frequent sites in the future!
