An incident in a prison in Virginia resulted in five guards injuries, as reported by state corrections officials. They reported that most attackers were members of the MS-13 gang who had illegally entered the United States.

At the Wallens Ridge State Prison, located in Western Virginia, three guards were stabbed and sought medical attention, along with the other two, after the incident on Friday, according to the State Correction Department.

The press release of the department revealed that six prisoners were implicated, all convicted of violent offenses such as murder and rape. Of these, five were “Verified members of the MS-13 gang by El Salvador in the country illegally”. The sixth prisoner was noted to be an American citizen linked to another gang.

“Five of the individuals responsible for this meaningless attack should never have been in this country in the first place,” said Chad Dotson, director of the Virginia Correction Department in a statement. “Every day, our officers put their lives on the line to ensure public safety. … This attack is an example of the dangers they face when they appear to work every day.”

Correction officials did not provide further details about the prison attack, citing an ongoing investigation.

The agency said three of the injured officers were treated and released on the day of the attack. The other two were hospitalized in stable condition.

Carla Miles, a spokesman for the correction department, said she did not know if the two guards remained in the hospital on Sunday.
