Review of the Book of “Roll the sun through the sky“By Barbara Lin Presc.
Summary: “From the ruins of Egypt to the privileged life of the upper west side of Manhattan, the story of the woman’s odyssey through the labyrinth of love, loyalty, recklessness and remorse, with the consequences of her actions throbbing through generations. Approaching a major birthday, Arden Rice saw everything: three marriages, difficulties and wealth, a choice that he regrets and defends, all fed by the same fierce desire – to give his daughter the best possible life. At least that’s what Arden says. But nothing is simple. Arden is persecuted by his persistent story, with a trace of damage and fraud. Still, she finally made a life in which she could be her best -until the unthinkable, and the expiration of a train engineer in attention casts this life into chaos. The secrets begin to unravel and Arden is questioning everything she believes – along with her own role in shaping the disturbing person has become her daughter. As the bets are increasing, especially for the vulnerable granddaughter who is now in his care, Arden must encounter questions that he has spent all his life: Can anyone be better than her oldest actions? “
Age: Adult; Genres: Literary, fiction; Settings: Era/s: Modern/modern; Location/s: Mostly US – New York, New York; Other categories: New, double deadlines, families, relationships, mothers and daughters, women.
To be fair, there are many not so big people who come into the life of Arden, although it comes in contact with some who seem problematic but are ultimately quite good. However, she seems to love to sabotage those better relationships because of a type of myopia and yes, a selfishness that penetrates her world. This said that she also knew when someone was not such a good person, although this insight was somehow myopia for her family members. Of course, the opposite is true where she can tell if anyone is good, but ignores goodness in some of her family members. In short, Arden is quite enigma and probably one of the most complicated characters I have met. Probably because it’s not easy to understand that it made me read.
Well, this is the writing of Probst, which is especially strong in this novel. In addition, Probst draws up a very diverse storyline, with many significant events that she breaks up with a bouncing and forth between decades. I guess this is a double time line novel or multiple time line, but I believe it is done skillfully to make us guess, which the chronological time line would not allow. This almost turns this into a mysterious novel, but of course, this is not really the case. However, you should know that at the beginning of this book I was somewhat confused by what roaring some of the characters played. This does not mean that there is an excess of members of the cast here, it just took me some time to understand the family trees. This may be the other reason why I felt some interruption with the main and secondary characters.
So, although this is not my favorite of the probe book, it is still very strongly written, with a very compelling story and characters who, though not completely cute, are certainly unique. If you haven’t read any of Probst’s books, I would actually say that this may be good to get started with. For all this, I still recommend this book with healthy four of the five stars.
This novel qualifies for the following reading challenges: New Release Challenge (#16).
