Microsoft blocks the extension for VS code alternatives – research snipers

Microsoft has caused dissatisfaction on the developer’s scene. Because after an updating of C/C ++-expansion for Microsoft code editor Visual Studio Code (VS Code), this no longer works in alternative development environments such as VS Codium or Cursor.

Intended disability?

The change in question came with version 1.24.5 of the expansion on April 3, 2025. Anyone who now tries to install the Appendix outside Microsoft Products will receive an error message that clearly limits use in Visual Studio, VS Code or other Microsoft services. Although these license conditions have been in force since 2020, Microsoft has only now technically implemented them.

The mass affects mainly projects such as VS Codium, an open version of the source of VS code, as well as Cursor, a code assistant based on code vs. The cursor in particular is now obliged to switch to other supplements. Michael Truell, the head of the Anysphere cursor manufacturer, announced that he would integrate open alternatives from the source to the product so as not to make the users dependent on the closed Microsoft additions.

Critics accuse Microsoft to prevent competitive products with this step – even if it is legitimate results of their platform. In developers’ circuits it is assumed that the restrictions relate to the introduction of “agent mode”-a new function it within Microsoft’s Copilot-Suite.

FTC should clarify

Some developers do not want to make this issue. An anonymous developer confirmed in the register that he asked the US trade supervision FTC to investigate possible practices in violation. So far, Microsoft has not commented on the charges. Meanwhile, developers are increasingly looking for really cheap and open alternatives – and the discussion of digital addictions is winning a car again.
