Is Garfield ‘1st firm run by him, a big job? – artificial lawyer
Is Garfield, who can guide you through a small process of claims using a Genai -based work flow and has a loop lawyer, a big job? Yes and no.
The Authority of Adjustment of the UK lawyers (SRA) has said it has ‘authorized the first legal firm providing legal services through it’. But many legal firms use it to develop their labor product, sign it with the supervision of the human lawyer, and then send it to the client. So this aspect is not really new.
Also, some commercial legal firms have applications directed by the one that provide legal results to clients. The difference is that firms like Macfarlanas (which provides DOC review for a harvey reconciliation for clients) are already regulated by SRA.
The idea of an affordable legal service and ‘easy touch’ that works mainly on the Internet and is accessible by everyone is not new. For example, farewell is now one of the biggest providers in the UK. He engages with clients through digital forms and also provides a ‘loop lawyer’, where it is necessary before things are finished.
Moreover, Joshua Browder’s Donotpay, by 2018, tried to support small claims for the general public at a very low cost using a digital interface and the ability to fill the shape. Of course, Donotpay went into some issues in the US, but the basic idea to help you through a legal process – including court treatment – with an open online portal to everyone, is not new.
And there are enterprises such as Cound, which he uses to provide legal assistance to people for a range of issues at a very affordable price, including writing legal letters, though not yet regulated by sra- (and this site would not think that he does not use lawyers in the loop.
In this case, Garfield offers legal aid that is supported by him, with a lawyer as part of the process. Onlines online and open to everyone – for claims in England and Wales up to 10,000.
So we have to be a little careful in thinking about Garfield based on Tunbridge Wells as something completely new and never before. That is to say, it seems to be an excellent initiative and is very welcome.
Its co -founders are Daniel Younga data scientist, and Philip YoungA lawyer who worked in some smaller legal firms but also had an eight -year stay in Baker McKenzie.
The way it works is as follows:
- ‘Invoices, contracts, correspondence: Throw information about debt on our platform, Garfield will join a case for you.
- Company’s home search: If the debtor is a company, Garfield will search for home companies for its accounts and tell you if the debtor appears.
- Polite Chaser: Garfield optionally generates and sends a letter that politely asks the debtor to pay the debt. Garfield will also help you deal with any response from the debtor
- Letter before the action: Garfield generates an official letter before the action that matches the rules of civil procedure of the court
- Request form and claim details: Garfield compiles a form of request and details of the request. When approved, it will submit them to court and calculate the interest according to the relevant statute or contract
- If you are not paid, the process varies depending on the debtor’s response.
- Pre -determined judgment: If the debtor does not respond, Garfield will seek judgment in your favor. When a trial is taken, Garfield prepares a letter notifying the debtor and requires payments.
- Acceptance: If the debtor responds by presenting a form of acceptance by accepting the matter as a whole or partially, Garfield will guide the user by deciding whether to accept that acceptance.
- Protection in court: Garfield will help you respond to defense and assist you in the subsequent stages of receiving a small request in court. Note that this step is summarized for brevity.
- And finally get your money again. ‘
In short, it is a workflow guided by checkpoints and human supervision, with affordable tariffs for different steps along the way.
However, and as mentioned above, it is really essential for people to understand that, as Sra explained: ‘Garfield is not autonomous And it will take only one step where the client has approved it, and moreover it is in place supervision and monitoring processes. ‘
And, most importantly of all:
‘According to the SRA rules, Adjusted lawyers still called will be responsible For the firm that gives high professional standards. This means that they will also be responsible for all the scores of the system and everything that goes wrong. ‘
This site looked Garfield on the list of Sra Solycors and found a lawyer there, co -founder Philip Young. He, and everyone else is employed to help, will be very busy if this is removed as they will have to check each document before it comes out.

Is this a big job?
Although it is important to see Garfield in a wider context and also not take over the idea that you ‘just press a button and get your money again’ without lawyers involved … .. as it is not really so simple … .. this is really an important step forward.
It has addressed an area of need that is usually very slow, expensive to engage with lawyers, and often leads to a matter of access to justice because most people simply give up given the lack of affordable support.
It is also showing that legal processes, with some well -designed work streams and some Genai to run things, plus some ‘light -touch’ legal surveillance, can be formed in affordable product offers. And that’s a great thing.
Garfield can also inspire others to explore different parts of the law that can be treated the same way.
Regarding the issue of the regulation, as mentioned above, Contest and others provide legal assistance by him already. What is different here is that Garfield has a lawyer who takes responsibility for the result – and most likely this meant that he received official approval from SRA … because, at his most essential level is still a ‘legal firm’.
So we are still in a position where a lawyer must be part of things, and can also get the decline if things go wrong, (see Al Think before the need for someone to blame and why the external danger is essential for the legal world).
But this is a very positive step ahead and maybe other lawyers will seek to do the same thing, ie. Find a workflow that they understand, add to it to absorb the process work, then add a lawyer to the top to gain the approval of SRA? Let’s hope other markets see similar developments as well.
In general, this site congratulates the founders of Garfield and also SRA for supporting this type of legal business. Because if legal technology does not improve the lives of all people, and not just a relatively small group of trade lawyers, then what is everything?
The last word goes Paul PhilipThe chief executive of SRA, who said: ‘We cannot allow to draw the bar for innovations that may have great public benefits. … .. This is likely to be the first of many legal firms led by him, we will closely monitor this new model of this new model, so we both can manage the risks and understand the benefits for consumers. ‘
