Life lessons from Kimmy Kimmel’s head writer (which applies to the rest of us)

By Joe byerly
Danny Riching write jokes for a living. As one of the Kimmy Kimmy’s head writers, bring a team that is called pages of material-most of what never makes it to the air. But behind the punchlines is a mind that applies very well beyond late night TV.
Regardless of if plotting Sister, written to the military orders, or sells products in the glow world, the one we all have in common is that human, with the egosies, and sake. And while the sticks are taller in any living life than others, all wrestling, and the temptation and temptation to take things.
Danny’s approach is built on emotional discipline, humility, and the prospects the qualities that matters both in a war room or a writer’s room.
Here are the lessons that remain with me from our recent conversation:
1. Do not take personally
When Danny and his team wrote Jimmy Kimmel, passed to the months of hours, thousands of jokes just to see most of the 15-minute window. Said:
“Write thousands of pleasure,” he remembers. “But perhaps only 30 will it be in the monologue.”
Not every great idea makes the stadium or took off the head. And is not a talent or value reflection – it’s just a part of the work. Is the price of doing business.
I can’t say how many things I worked in my military career that never see the light of the day. And yes, what a suck. But the refusal is inevitable. Your value is not determined by what is picked up. It is defined by how you keep it up.
That leads to the next Danny’s next lesson:
2. You cannot control the result only the work
Five days a week, Danny and his team writes for Jimmy kimmel live. I am
“We can’t control if he says,” explain. “We cannot converrap if audiences. We can control how you work on our material, honest your mystion for the end, you will not conceive of that part of that part”
It’s right easy obsession on the outside: The head like this? Shall I have promotion? My idea the land with the group? But those questions distract you only what matter in truth: your effort.
Come in my military career, I obsessed promotions, for award, and acknowledgment. I think you get in 70 hours of work, would you pay. But I have learned – sometimes the hard way – that the fruits of our work does not belong to us. They are never guaranteed. You can do everything “right” and it is not the result you think you deserve.
It works in order Results are a recipe for disappointment and resentment.
As Danny, we need to find completion in the work itself. Is the part you own. That’s where the rewards really lives.
When you focus on the job instead of the result, we have to wear the task to the table – instead of a divided minded the validation.
3…………… I am Feedback is only data
Even when a joke makes them in the show, it’s not always the ground. Sometimes the audience doesn’t laugh at harder than jimmy or writers planned.
Danny says, “If you have something that bombs, learning from this and go, ok, why did it be that bag?”
Here’s the mind: Don’t you personally take the study.
Feedback, you are positive or negative, it’s a gift. It is easy to have addicted to praise because it feels as a validation. But neither lodes nor the criticism should be disappear. I’m just the information inputs – crime we can use to improve our craft, our leadership, our work.
4. Don’t be easy, be great
When people ask Danny if Jimmy kimmel is a good guy to work, their answer is honest.
“No. I love it. It is a great guy to work for. But it’s not a easy guy to work”, admits.
And that’s the point.
Jimmy is doing at an incredibly high standard and that standard set the tone for the entire team.
“We know that we make a comedy shows every night,” he says says. “But that’s what we do – and we’re passionate about doing as good as it can be.”
A lot of people fight with this lesson. They want to be pleased, so decrease the standards to earn validation. But in doing, lack the brand.
The best military chiefs I worked at Gimmy in similar to be easy but were great. They have established a tall bar and quietly collected all those who are around to meet. Not screaming. Not talking to people. But looking forward to a lot – because they expected a lot of yourself. I am
And what leads to the final lesson:
5. Taken for example
As a writer of the head, Danny should not write every morning. Has a lot of any other meetings of each other, production decisions, spread. But, he always shows for writing every day.
Asked because, light danny light.
“One really loves. Two I don’t want my skills to the younger shooters on the show to see that people who people are always arrived when dark to write tricks.”
And it’s not just Danny. Often when you wake, jimmy is already in this – or stay late to do the same thing for the same reason.
“It’s hard to get off when your boss works harder than all,” Danny says. “When I finish my day, Jimmy gets in the stage to do the hardest part of his”.
It’s easy Asks Excellence from others. Is much more difficult pattern Our day after day. But when we do, we wish you were around us to lift their standards. So, I will never find in the writers room with the lies, jobs to do to get. Whether you see a team, lifting a family, orwards behind the scenesians – you don’t take personal, deal feedback as data, don’t be easy, and drive for example.
Listen to my whole interview with Danny where we discuss the relatives and their new book wow, you look terrible! As relatives more and live less. Episode Drops Saturday!
