In the second week of 2025, Microsoft will publish the first regular hot update for Windows 11 24h2 – the group announced this a few weeks ago. The company has now confirmed this and explains the new update construction on Windows News Center.

This innovative updated technology revolutionizes system maintenance, as security updates can be installed without the resumption that has always been required. For companies in particular, this implies a significant decrease in time and the associated increase in productivity.

Drastic reduction

So far, patch hot updates were only available as judicial versions that companies can use to prove functionality. With the next day of Patch on May 13, the official initial signs of innovation will take place. An important advantage of hot patch is drastic minimization of the necessary system resume.

In the future, systems that will be updated through Hot Patch will be reinstated only four times a year after patch days instead of every month. The Hot Patch function is implemented as an expansion of Windows Update, companies must also have configured autopatch.

To make the transition easier, Microsoft has now provided extensive resources for IT administrators to inform about all the important details. In addition to technical documentation, this includes all the new patch calendar and detailed configuration guidelines.

Technical requirements and availability

April update KB5055523 (Build 26100.3775) is a prerequisite for the use of Hot Patch Hotds. By March 2025, Hot Patch’s updates were only available for ARM processors; Intel and AMD CPUs have also been supported since April.

Hotpatching can also only be used for Windows 11 Enterprise Editions 24h2 version. Although updates can also technically operate in consumer versions, Microsoft at least currently limits their use in corporate environments. A subsequent expansion in other publications has not yet been publicly discussed.

Technology background

Hotpatch technology is not new; It has already been used in Windows Server versions and now only transferred to Windows 11. Technically, when the code is hot, the code is imported directly into the current process. This requires special system preparation and careful planning of the update sequences.

For the Windows Server 2025, this function will be subject to a fee from July 2025. Originally developed for Cloud environments in which the durations are critical, the technology now finds its way into Microsoft’s desktop operating systems.
