Today’s book recommendation is a recent edition, which I look forward to last year. I had attended an event where the author read part of Chapter One and I was gathered. This mixing of science fiction and fantasy takes place in San Francisco in three terms or two in the past and one in the not too distant future. This is a beautifully written and provocative thought about our relationships and duties with each other over time.

The most early anchor in this book is in 1906, which some of us, who are from the Bay area, know that it is a really significant year in San Francisco history. Our main character in the 1906 time line is Niwan. Lee Nuan is about sixteen and he is currently in San Francisco because her father in China has sold her to arrange a gambling. She does homework for Chinatown Mob’s boss and this homework is quickly becoming sexual traffic as she is forced to work in one of the associates.

The second time line was in 2006 with a strange, Chinese American named Nathan. He is a designer who works in the technology and is a lit burner. In this context, the term burner refers to the devoted man, which is a multi -day hedonistic feast of art in the Nevada Desert. Nathan’s work is protested because of his role in support of a technology company that depends on the child’s slavery needed for all our technological products. Although terrified, this is actually based and I appreciate the author who gives awareness of it and uses it as an opportunity for moral awakening and evolution.

The third and main time line is a hundred years later in 2106. The Maida Dream has ability to psony, as well as many people after something has happened called “flowering”. Her ability is psychometry, which is the ability to hold an object and to learn the history of her property and what she witnesses. During her new job task, she receives some truly intense and truly horrifying readings from a particular object, an object that readers will recognize both the Li Nuan time line and Nathan’s timeline.

I loved this book so much. It was a great reading, a great step, a captivating story and an impressive display of conversations between the past and the future and the benefits of having these links. Warnings about the content of racism, sexual assault and harassment, historical sexual trafficking of minors, physical and verbal violence, violence, use of substances and deaths associated with drugs.
