So Devin wore a skirt

So Devin wore a skirt

Book cover

Almost everyone in Devin’s household has already found the perfect clothing for Nanabapa’s holiday: Mom looks like a “soft, pink cloud in her Langa”, Daddy proudly rages her shirt with a collar, brother JJ shakes a hip tie, and Sister Amaya has a couple of fairies. But Devin is still not sure what to wear. After much discussion, he makes a blue beret and the shiny blue skirt of Amaya. Devin really feels like herself, but when Amaya protests (“What will Nanabap say?”) He decides to hide his outfit under the Ninja and Wizard nose suit. As he dances at the party, Devin overheats and longs to throw some layers – but will Nanabapa approve? When Devin finally reveals his skirt, he is nervous, but his family congratulates him with smiles, and Nanabapa compliments the boy of his dance moves. Material projection of a young boy of color who is proud to be himself-and what is supported by an unconditionally loving family is a festive identity of identity. With pastel-like textures, Fleming’s cartoon illustrations alternate vignettes with the spread of the whole page, capturing Devin’s initial horror and his joy when he finally dissolves with his skirt on a glorious display.
