() Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum must rethink its opposition to the idea of United States troops operating in its country to fight drug traffickers, a federal official said.
During the weekend, Sheinbaum said she did not accept US President Donald Trump’s offer to send to the US military. She said her country is ready to cooperate, but that American boots on land in Mexico would go far.
“The territory cannot be violated. Sovereignty cannot be sold. Sovereignty is small and protected,” she said, speaking in Spanish, during a Saturday appearance.
Trump confirmed Sheinbaum’s offer and refusal as she spoke to reporters on Sunday, saying: “Mexico’s president is a lovely woman, but she is so afraid of cartels that she can’t think right.”
Ron Vitiello, a senior adviser to customs and border protection in the US, said the Mexican president should reconsider, given the widespread holding that the cartels have throughout Mexico.
“The diligent people in Mexico don’t want the cartels to control things,” he said on Sunday. “If she needs that help, she has to ask for it. That’s an opportunity once in a lifetime.”
“It has to bend,” Vitiello added. “If this includes (us) bodies, so be it.”
Since taking office in January, Trump has sent a variety of law enforcement agencies on the southern border to curb illegal immigration and drug smuggling, including deadly fentanil. The US military has even set forces on the federal land along the border on the US side.
