The BBC has excavated another vintage clip that reveals how far technology has come in recent decades.
Transmitted in 1984 in Tomorrow – The emergence of the BBC flag technology of the day – presenter Peter Macann begins by pronouncing the words “Digital Compact Disc Player” with the kind of clarity suggesting that most of the audience was listening to such a device for the first time. Which were probably.
“He uses a laser beam to read musical information from the record,” Macann explains, apparently forgetting that he is talking about a disk, not a traditional vinyl record.
The BBC presenter shows how manufacturers tend to make the technology more mobile, but adds that smaller vibrations can make the music pass. He then demonstrates the fact by supporting the CD player on a difficult surface, and with enough certainty, the music is thrown across the country.
The footage then cuts into a computer animation many of the 1980s revealing how the CD Player laser reads the data on the disk, and why it is thrown when worried.
To overcome this problem, manufacturers added a new circuit to the device that monitors the laser position when playing a disk. If a vibration causes the laser to jump, the circuit ensures that the laser remains in the right position, enabling uninterrupted reproduction.
The presenter then shows a non-removable CD CD, but with a view, but with an active, and demonstrates technology in action. Of course, when he shakes the device around, the music continues to play without any look (though viewers will note that he does not knock it as before).
Finally, Macaan is thrown into a jag to give it a proper test. After accidentally changing a short distance (it was transmitted directly, so no editing), it quickly finds a device ahead as a true presentation professional and continues to drive some speed bumps. Technology works perfectly, with viewers undoubtedly departed from a very harsh cd player for rapidly, pits, and even controversial Grandad driving – all without bypassing a beat.
