What’S what is next for SAS 9 and SAS ENTERPRISE GUIDE?
In Sas Explore 2023, Bryan Harris (Sas CTO) and Susan Owenby (SAS 9 Division head in R&D) appeared on the main scene with a strong message about the future of SAS 9. From my conversations with those present, it is clear that this is exactly what many clients have expected.
To summarize what was announced on stage (and note, I have updated this list in May 2025 To reflect the recent progress and notifications):
- SAS 9 will be available to our customers as they move to Sas Viya.
- SAS is investing in SAS 9 with the creation of Sas 9 division. The SAS 9 Division includes developers, testers and product managers, all committed to keeping SAS 9 relevant and its productive customers with their platform.
- SAS released SAS 9.4 Maintenance 8 (SAS 9.4m8) At the beginning of 2023. The team issues SAS 9.4 quarterly security updates and adjustments as needed. Other full maintenance issuance (SAS 9.4m9) is planned for June 2025.
- there WILL Become Future SAS 9 omissions. SAS Software Support Policy promises standard support for a 5 -year release from its general availability date. For Sas 9.4m8, which gives standard support to January 2028. Assuming SAS 9.4m9 planned sticks planned, that update would set standard support in 2030. With more SAS 9 omissions on the horizon, support for SAS 9 will move forward beyond that for many years. (As confirmed on a recent webinar, M10 is already books for a future edition.)
- Starting with Sas Enterprise Guide 8.4, you can connect to Sas Viya. Soon you can also connect to SAS Viya workbench (SAS 8.6 Enterprise Guide, planned for June 2025).
What is new in SAS 9.4 Maintenance 9?
Construction of a urea to Sas Viya
Even with this concentration in SAS 9, SAS is not allowing our attention to Sas Viya. The Sas Viya platform has monthly omissions and is where most new innovations develop. However, the movement in Sas Viya by SAS 9 can be a great project, and SAS continues to build new tools and processes to help customers evaluate and migrate their analytics work on the most modern platform.
As part of this effort, Bryan and Susan announced that SAS Enterprise Guide will soon be able to connect to a SAS Viya 4 environment. (And, from March 2024, this is now available as Enterprise Guide SAS 8.4!) This is a difference from the previous direction, and is a direct result of the client’s reactions. So far, the SAS Enterprise Guide has been connected only for SAS 9, because Sas Studio (with many improvements) has been the luxury coding interface for Sas Viya. Sas Studio is STILL The best environment to exploit the features of Sas Viya, but can use the SAS enterprise guide as a bridge to use your existing projects and job ranks while approve Sas Viya.
SAS Enterprise Guide is now integrated with SAS Viya 4
SAS programmers are broken for choices
In addition to these SAS 9 announcements, Sas Explore presented SAS Viya Workbench Prime Minister, a lightweight weight -lined coding environment for developers using SAS, Python, and R. These are all local code experiences using the SAS Viya platform with your favorite programming language. Sas Viya workbench allows you to use VS Code, Jupyter Notebooks, and even SAS Enterprise Guide to your coding experience. Read more about these technology announcements in this news announcement.
And if you love VS code (I do), you can use SAS stretch for VS code now to manage and watch your SAS programs while connecting to SAS Viya or SAS 9 environments to execute programs and view the results.
